Covid has cancelled many things, but we don’t have to let it rob us of making sweet memories with our children. Some of my favorite memories from when I was a mom with young children are times when I set a small table with fancy placemats and simple treats, transforming an ordinary day into something special. Author Tara Knudson and illustrator Pauline Steward have a new book out that would pair perfectly with such a celebration.
Valentine’s Day Treats is a perfect read aloud for pre-school children and even includes a baking activity recipe. This board book will make a wonderful addition to your book collection. If you would like to purchase it, click on the link at the bottom of this post.
Here is a list of some simple ways to throw a spontaneous party!
- Cut out some paper hearts together. Tape them to a door or wall.
- Make a paper chain.
- Have the kids color on some paper for “placemats.”
- Make name cards.
- Serve a snack on a fancy plate. Almost any snack can seem special served in an unusual way.
- Wear clothes of a certain color, or allow the kids play dress up.
- Play some special music in the background. Dance!
- Tell each other reasons why you love each person at the party.
- Invite a special stuffed animal friend and set a place for him at the table. What “food” will the stuffed animal need?
- Play a game: almost anything can become a relay race or a tossing game.
